Fidel Castro Kept the Frozen Body of An American Airman Following the Failed Bay of Pigs Invasion

In 1961, during the ill-fated Bay of Pigs Invasion, the United States covertly sent personnel from the Alabama Air National Guard on a secret mission to support the attack. Operating unofficially, American involvement in Cuba was kept tightly under wraps.

The invasion turned into an embarrassment for the CIA, especially after the body of Lt. Thomas “Pete” Ray was discovered. The US government avoided acknowledging and claiming the airman’s remains for many years, contributing to the episode’s lasting infamy.
