For more than a week, the U.S. Coast Guard has been attempting to contain what it’s calling “an uncontrolled oil and natural gas discharge” off the Gulf Coast. The Coast Guard on Friday said more than 165 responders are working with the Unified Command—which includes the Coast Guard and the Louisiana Oil Spill Coordinator’s Office—in the containment attempt.
The Coast Guard was notified of the discharge around 4 p.m. April 26 when an Oil Spill Coordinator’s Office confirmed by flyover the presence of crude oil in the Gulf of Mexico. The spill is reported to have originated from a well owned by Spectrum OpCo at its Garden Island Bay Production Facility in Plaquemines Parish, more than 80 miles southeast of New Orleans.
