Sir William Matthew Flinders Petrie is considered to be the man who introduced the western world to the North African country’s historical splendours. Locals had been excavating in and around the region for years before him, but when he began his work in the mid-1880s, Europeans began to arrive in their numbers, taking home with them much of what they found.
