Chanting, beating drums and playing pan flutes and askomadoura – bagpipes made from goat skins – the masked Dionysian revellers dance around a giant red phallus.
These revellers could have sprung from the pages of a play by Aristophanes, but the Phallephoria penis and fertility celebration – enjoyed by Athenians several millennia ago – is just one of the ancient festivals that are being revived in Greece.
