In the 2011 film Melancholia, a “rogue planet” orbits around Earth briefly, looming large in the skyline, before it crashes into the planet and destroys all life. The same year, the film Another Earth also features a mysterious planet appearing in the sky above our own and wreaking havoc with the lives of those who live below. This is obviously an arresting visual idea—a planet covering the whole sky. But is it possible?
